We would encourage everyone who has contact with schools to think about submitting an application form. Nominations can be made by anyone - local authorities, headteachers, teachers, classroom assistants, parents, pupils, business and employers working with schools, and the general public – simply by completing the online application form.
The Scottish Education Awards are open to all Scottish government funded educational establishments including nurseries, primary, secondary and special needs schools. Teachers, headteachers and education supporters (e.g. janitors, librarians, catering staff and classroom assistants) are eligible for the individual categories.
For an individual award the nominated teacher must have qualified teacher status. All full time, part time and peripatetic teachers and classroom assistants from every subject and activity area are eligible for nomination, including teaching and non-teaching heads. Entries for the probationary teacher of the year must be in their first year of teaching as defined by the General Teaching Council.
Please see our conditions of entry for further information.
Do I have to ask permission before nominating a school or teacher?
No, we will check with headteachers in schools if the nomination gets to the final stages.
Where can I make the nomination?
Nominations can be made online through this site.
Yes, nominations can only be submitted online. However, if you experience difficulties please use the Contact us section on the website and we will respond to your question as soon as we can.
Do I need to send anything else in or provide evidence?
No, our experienced judging panel will make decisions based on the information provided on your nomination form.
How much work is involved in nominating someone?
The nomination process has been streamlined to make entering quick and easy. All we need you to do is complete the online nomination form by answering each question as comprehensively as possible in order that the judging panel can gain a full understanding of the reasons for the nomination, and once you are happy with the entry simply submit it.
How many nominations can I make?
You may nominate as many different schools, headteachers, teachers and classroom assistants as you wish. Please note however that nominations will be sifted, and finalists short-listed based on the content of the nominations rather than the number of nominations received.
What happens next after I have nominated?
Once a nomination is submitted you will receive an e-mail confirming your nomination has been submitted successfully. Once nominations close, all entries will be assessed by a panel of educational experts against the relevant category criteria. From this, nominations will be shortlisted in each category, and visited by judges from the Scottish Education Awards. Those nominees shortlisted will be contacted in May to agree a suitable date for the judges to visit. Following the completion of the nominee visits, the judges will determine the winner and two runners up in each category. At this stage the three finalists in each category and representatives of their school will be informed and invited along to the final awards ceremony.
Does a large number of nominations for a school / teacher mean they are more likely to win?
No, simply receiving a high number of votes does not mean an individual or school will automatically win an award, each nomination is judged independently.
